5 tips when looking for a franchise

Franchise Champs·Jun 2026· 6 min read

Before you fall for a logo, run these five checks. They'll save you time and steer you toward a brand that fits your goals.

The best franchise isn't the most famous one, it's the one that fits your budget, your strengths, and the life you want. Use these five filters.

1. Start with your numbers

Know your liquid cash and net worth before you browse. It narrows the field fast and keeps you out of brands you can't fund.

2. Match the work to your strengths

Some franchises are hands-on trades, others are management roles or sales-driven. Pick a day-to-day you'd actually enjoy.

3. Validate with real franchisees

Call existing owners. Ask what surprised them, what they'd change, and whether they'd buy again. It's the single most useful step.

4. Read the FDD carefully

The Franchise Disclosure Document is required reading. It spells out fees, obligations, and the brand's track record.

5. Don't rush

A good franchisor won't pressure you. Take the time to compare two or three brands side by side before committing.
