How does franchising actually work?

Franchise Champs·Jun 2026· 5 min read

Franchising lets you run your own business on a proven system. Here's the relationship between you and the brand, in plain English.

A franchise is a license. The company that owns the brand (the franchisor) lets you (the franchisee) open and run a location using its name, systems, and support, in exchange for an upfront fee and ongoing royalties.

You own the business: you sign the lease, hire the team, and keep the profit. What you don't do is figure it all out from scratch, the playbook already exists.

What you get

A recognized brand, a tested operating model, training, marketing, and a support team that wants you to succeed because they earn when you do.

In return you agree to run the business the brand's way and pay a royalty, usually a percentage of revenue.

Is it right for you?

Franchising suits people who want to own a business but value a system over a blank page. If you like following a proven process and building a team, it's worth a serious look.
